Սուրբ Սոֆիայի կամ Այա Սոֆիայի տաճարն ի սկզբանե եղել է Բյուզանդական կայսրության պատրիարքի նստավայրը: Այնուհետև, թուրքերը, գրավելով Բյուզանդիայի մայրքաղաքը, այս տաճարը դարձրել են մզկիթ: Ներկայումս Սուրբ Սոֆիան հանդիսանում է թանգարան: Համարվում է բյուզանդական «ոսկե դարի» խորհրդանիշ: Ռուս գիտնական Կոնդակովի բնորոշմամբ կայսրության համար այս տաճարն արել է ավելին, քան դրա ցանկացած պատերազմ: Գտնվում է Ստանբուլում:

է հռոմեացի կայսր
Կոստանդիանոս Ա Մեծի
օրոք: Հենց նա 324 թվականին
հիմնեց Կոստանդնուպոլիսը որպես կայսրության մայրքաղաք:
Իսկ 326-ին Կոստանդիանոսը
մայրաքաղաքում կառուցեց առաջին եկեղեցին
սուրբ Սոֆիայի անունով:
Սոֆիա անունը հաճախ բացատրում

531 թվականին տեղի ունեցած ապստամբության
ժամանակ:
Դրանից հետո Հուստինիոնաոս 1-ին
կայսրը դրեց նոր տաճար:
Այդ ժամանակ Կոստանդնուպոլսում
կար մոտ 30 եկեղեցի,
որոնք աչքի էին ընկնում
արծաթով, ոսկով ու բազմագույն
մարմարով: Բայց Հուստինիանոսն իր
առաջ նպատակ էր
դրել կառուցել այնպիսի
տաճար, որն իր
շքեղությամբ ու մեծությամբ
կգերազանցի աշխարհում նմանատիպ ցանկացած
այլ կառույցի: Տաճարի
հիմնական կառուցողներին համարում են Անթեմիուսին`
Թալեսին և Միլետ
քաղաքից(ներկայումս Թուրքիայում գտնվող)
Իսիդորին: Նրանց ղեկավարությամբ տաճարի
կառուցման վրա են
աշխատել շուրջ 100 ճարտարապետներ:

1453 թվականին Այա Սոֆյայի տաճարը դարձավ մզկիթ` ստանալով
4 մինարեթ, որը իսլամին համաձայն` հավատացյալին կանչում է դեպի աղոթքը:
Այա Սոֆիան մնում է մեծ խորհրդանիշ ինչպես քրիստոնյաների,
այնպես էլ մուսուլմանների համար:
